On Tuesday, Democratic candidate Jen Mangrum lost her bid to become the new superintendent of public instruction. On Friday, Mangrum posted on a popular Facebook page to declare her desire to sit on the State Board of Education.
Members of the board are selected by the governor and confirmed by the General Assembly (unless a vacancy occurs).
For Mangrum, there are two pathways to the State Board of Education: Eric Davis’ at-large seat and Alan Duncan’s Triad region seat. I doubt that Cooper plans to reappoint McCrory appointee and chair Eric Davis. His term expires in March. If Cooper appointee and vice-chair Alan Duncan does not vie for reappointment when his term expires in March, then Mangrum would be able to take his seat.
