Public school advocacy groups claim that public school appropriation as a percent of the North Carolina General Fund is indicative of the legislature’s commitment to public schools. Instead, it mostly reflects the expansion of other parts of the state budget, particularly health and human services.
Regardless, the next time someone asks, last year’s 39.5% mark was the largest share of the General Fund since the 2005-06 school year.
