North Carolina public schools will remain closed through May 15 in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus.
The state’s 1.5 million students have been home since last week when Gov. Roy Cooper ordered all K-12 public schools closed through at least March 30. But Cooper said Monday that the closures need to be extended to promote public health and safety.
As of Friday, 45 states had closed schools and the remainder had closed at least some schools, Education Week reported. The decision has left more than more than 50 million students out of class.
May 15 is an interesting choice. If schools reopen on May 18, students would return to school for a few of the remaining weeks of the 2019-20 school year.
I think this is a much wiser plan than simply declaring that all public schools will be canceled for the rest of the school year.
