In Friday’s lead editorial, the Charlotte Observer endorsed former state Sen. Cal Cunningham in U.S. Senate Democratic primary:

Cunningham offers a wider appeal, a diverse coalition of supporters and the most well-funded Democratic campaign, and he does so without compromising Democratic Party values. His candidacy provides the best opportunity for voters who want to unseat the Republican incumbent. We recommend him for the U.S. Senate Democratic primary.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles has endorsed Michael Bloomberg for president:

“I support Mike Bloomberg to be our next president because the country needs a candidate in 2020 who cares for people and will work every day to ensure we will have a better tomorrow,” Lyles said in a statement. “That candidate is Mike Bloomberg.”

Bloomberg’s past statements on frisking young African-American males and redlining bias in home loans are coming back to haunt him. But his latest comments belittling farming and factory jobs as not requiring a lot of “grey matter” might be the 2020 version of Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” speech. This is not the way to win middle America, Democrats.
