According to the National Weather Service, Hurricane Florence dropped an estimated 8 trillion gallons of water across states in the Southeast. Counties in southeastern North Carolina, towns along the coast, and communities near waterways were hit hardest. Countless roads, homes, and businesses were destroyed. Thousands of acres of crops were ruined, and North Carolina’s pork and poultry industries were devastated. Moody’s Analytics estimated that the hurricane produced at least $17 billion in property damage. Recovery will take months, even years, and require a combination of state and federal government assistance, insurance, and private giving to be successful. To discuss the road to recovery, Terry and Kory called on Joe Coletti, a senior fellow at the John Locke Foundation who writes about budget and human services issues.
