North Carolina’s Incarceration Rate Remains Comparatively Low

The Vera Institute has just released a report compiling national prison data for 2017. The report shows that 36,454 people were imprisoned in North Carolina in 2017, 1% more than in 2016. At 355/100,000, North Carolina’s incarceration rate remained signifcantly lower than the national average, which was 457/100,000.
