High Point’s ‘BB&T Point’ downtown stadium

In case you missed it, earlier this week High Point broke ground on its $36 million downtown baseball stadium, which will bear the name “BB&T Point.”

In addition to the stadium, Wednesday’s ceremony was also a celebration of the private development planned for downtown, including an events center, children’s museum, park and playground, to be paid for with $50 million in commitments gathered by High Point University President Nido Qubein.

A hotel and apartment complex are also planned, and officials hope the stadium will spur more restaurants, offices and other projects downtown.

The stadium is being designed to host other types of sports besides baseball, as well as concerts.

“What we will do today is not just a groundbreaking for our stadium, but it’s a groundbreaking for a new downtown High Point,” said Mayor Jay Wagner.

Meanwhile in Greensboro, looks like they’re moving some serious dirt—maybe even setting some rebar—-on the downtown Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. Perhaps I’ll live to see the finished product —unless the City Council continues to ‘spend an inordinate amount of time discussing MWBE contracts.’
