Triad Business Journal reports the number of layoffs at the Greensboro News & Record and the Winston-Salem Journal, which are both under the BH Media umbrella. Meanwhile, alt-weekly Triad City beat names some names at the N&R— editorial writer Doug Clark and columnist Susan Ladd— both who have provided much subject matter for my posts over the years. Meanwhile over at the Journal, columnist John Railey bids farewell:
And now, my good reader friends, our fun and lively dialogue comes to an end. Today is my last day at the Journal, the paper I love where I spent the best 20 years, so far, of my life. But the time has come for me to seek new challenges.
…As for me, I will always carry in my heart and soul the long tradition of which I was privileged to be part of at the Journal and at my newspaper homes before, that of being a newspaperman and standing up for our cherished First Amendment, a fight needed now more than ever. That battle makes the hearts of those of us who will forever love it sing.
Note one commenter beneath Railey’s column says “Please Journal hire a conservative replacement if you can find one.” That’s missing the point—Railey will not be replaced period, neither will Doug Clark or Susan Ladd. They’re just casualties in the newspaper industry’s long slow war of attrition.
