Estimating the number of home-school students is more art than science.  While North Carolina’s Division of Non-Public Education takes a systematic approach to counting the number of home schools and students in the state, few other states do.

Every year, the A to Z Home’s Cool website publishes state-by-state estimates of home-school students.  Their estimates for the current 2017-18 school year place North Carolina in the top three states for total home-school population.

California: 198,947

Texas: 150,705

North Carolina: 131,295

New York: 91,499

Florida: 89,821

The Division of Non-Public Education will publish the official estimate for the 2017-18 school year in the summer.
