…physicians just aren’t choosing to practice in sparsely populated towns. While the supply of physicians is increasing across North Carolina, only five percent of family doctors relocated to rural areas of the state after graduating from their residency program between 2008 and 2011. The chart below, presented by Dr. Erin Fraher at University of North Carolina’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, was discussed at length during yesterday’s subcommittee meeting on medical education and residency.
