Gboro performing arts center booster challenging Budd in District 13

News & Record reports Greensboro attorney and philanthropist Kathy Manning will enter the Democratic primary in hopes of challenging incumbent Rep. Ted Budd in the 13th Congressional District:

Manning said that if she is selected as the Democrat standard bearer in the district, she will challenge Budd’s voting history on issues that are important to the average taxpayer, working families and economic development.

“I’m a business-oriented moderate who believes we need to do whatever we can to provide affordable health care and the good education that will get people prepared for the jobs of the future,” said Manning, 60, who worked for years as an immigration lawyer but no longer is in practice.

As a volunteer, she has played an active role in the planning and financing of the $78.1 million Tanger Center for the performing arts, the future downtown building being built in a public-private partnership that she has helped as chief fundraiser.

The N&R reported in detail Manning’s role with the Tanger Center, mostly email exchanges with Greensboro Coliseum director Matt Brown, who is overseeing the Tanger Center construction, voicing concern on the part of private donors who weren’t seeing any progress. The Rhino Times reports the bid for the project is expected to be awarded at the City Council’s Dec. 19 meeting.
