The N.C. Court of Appeals has affirmed earlier rulings against five people seeking compensation from the state because of forced sterilization. Each case was tied to the state eugenics program that extended into the 1970s.
The state Supreme Court had returned the cases to address constitutional issues appellate judges had dismissed. But in each case, Appeals Court panels ruled unanimously that the plaintiffs had failed to make a constitutional claim that would entitle them to compensation.
