Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, running unopposed for a Buncombe County District 1 commissioners’ seat, got to speak at the White House’s Easter Prayer Breakfast yesterday. Beach-Ferrara is a minister, but one doesn’t hear about her denomination or house of worship a lot. Instead, one never hears her name without a reference to the fact she is openly LGBT. She brought the group gathered in DC greetings from Buncombe County and the LGBT community of North Carolina. She then read from the Beatitudes, saying later it had special significance in North Carolina in light of HB2.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest issued a statement Monday saying the Obama administration is “concerned about the potential harmful impact of this law, especially on transgender youth, and believe [sic.] it is mean-spirited and sends the wrong message.”
Following her talks, the president once again took advantage of the prayer breakfast to belittle Christians for their narrow-minded fears. The local daily indicates he expounded “how Christian beliefs relate to worries about terrorism and refugees.” The message of Easter to the believers, I gathered, is to shove Jesus aside just a little more.
