This morning, I pulled off to the side of the road and stopped for a fire truck with its signal blaring. It’s something people in Michigan did all the time. I’ve always felt an emergency vehicle signals a fellow human being is in pain. They could be suffering a heart attack or smoke inhalation. Every second counts. I have a friend who prays with her little girls every time they pull over for an ambulance. She works in an emergency room. But today, the guy behind swung out, right in front of the fire truck, to pass the dweeb who dared to stop in traffic. I only mention this because it is not an abnormal occurrence. An old EMT friend used to joke about the way people in Madison County drove. They got points for dinner-table discussions for each car they could get in a slow train behind them, and emergency vehicles counted 10 points.
