Call me slow, but it was only this morning that I put two things together. It is not unusual for me to berate myself for renting a room, driving a car, and eating all the food I want when half the kids in the county don’t know where their next meal is coming from and the other half get free or reduced breakfast and lunch at school and backpacks of food for the weekend, and then another 20 percent are on food stamps. On top of all that, though, was a recent statistic published by Buncombe County that 70 percent of kids in the system, aged 6 months to 10 years, test positive for illicit drug use. That is, well over 10,000 families in Buncombe County have money to buy their children drugs, but not enough for food. Can a case be made that a similar proportion of the rich kids, whose families have primary care providers and buy groceries with cash, are also stoners?
