Time for the annual possum drop is nearing. It is a redneck tradition wherein a live possum is lowered in a glitzy box because us mountain folks can’t afford to lower a ball like the evil corporate peeps do in Times Square. Those not respecting our diversity have been suing for a few years because possums have told them they are team players and they don’t like any single possum to get the spotlight. Legislators have interfered successfully suspending possum rights from December 29 to January 2. And so the drama this year, the local daily informs us, is:
A Wake County District Court judge has declined to halt a lawsuit seeking to overturn a new state law intended to protect the annual possum drop. . . . [Judge Bryan Collins] said the law could be held to violate the principle of equal treatment under the law.
