Today on the Pope Center site we have an Independence Day special: a series of snapshots revealing how the nation’s founding is treated in academia. For the most part, not so well. Discussion of the founding on campus suffers more from neglect than from overt attacks. While there may be some hard-core types who discuss how many of the Founding Fathers had slaves, for the most part the nation’s early history and the ideas behind it are ignored.
Of course, what the founding actually stood for gets hammered. In the hallowed halls of the Ivory Tower, the Constitution is something to be changed, not adhered to. Government is supposed to do things for us, not stay the heck out of the way. But there is at least one hopeful development occurring.
