While a legal battle continues over new opportunity scholarships in North Carolina, the state will proceed with a lottery to determine which of the more than 5,500 families that applied for a scholarship will get one of about 2,400 scholarships funded for the next year.

Meanwhile, the group Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina is leading the push to increase funding for the program. PEFNC wants all qualified applicants to be able to secure a scholarship, which would allow a family to move a child from a public school to a private school that better meets the child’s educational needs.

PEFNC led a 30-minute news conference on the issue this afternoon. Click play below to watch the proceedings.
