Teachers unions already are marshaling their efforts to politicize and marginalize the movie “Won’t Back Down” even before it is released on Friday. The movie, inspired by real events and starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, is about a Pennsylvania parent’s fight to win school choice and break away from a failing school whose elected board of education is backed by the teachers union. It is a desire of and a struggle by millions of parents across the country to be able to send their children to better schools that can address their unique circumstances. For that reason, teachers union pre-emptive backlash that the movie endorses corporate predators preying on public schools shows how out of touch those teachers are. The school choice movement is sparked and fueled by parents dissatisfied with their public schools. In free market fashion, some entrepreneurs follow the demand to set up private schools. But public magnets and charter schools also should be part of vital reforms.
