Invasive species of the moment: running bamboo. As the Wilmington Star-News reports:

The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher had so much trouble with running bamboo that workers had to use heavy machinery to remove its roots, said Melanie Doyle, a conservation horticulturist for the aquarium.

“If a homeowner is trying to get rid of bamboo, it can take years,” she said.

Running bamboo, the type commonly planted, is an invasive species and thrives in wetland areas, Doyle said.
