There are 4 candidates in the race for the Republican nomination representing three different perspectives. There is one conservative, Rick Santorum, one libertarian, Ron Paul, and two purely pragmatic politicians, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Clearly Santorum and Paul represent the two dominant ideologies within the party. While leaning right, both Romney and Gingrich have proven themselves to be ideological eunuchs who have over the years taken both liberal and conservative positions depending on who their opponents are and the audiences are that they are trying to cater to. Neither of them deserve to be in a contest for the soul of the party, for the simple reason that, at least ideologically, neither of them have a soul. Clearly, the real ideological dispute within the party is and should be between conservatives and libertarians. In this dispute neither Newt or Mitt really have a role. And given that, they should simply bow out and leave the battle to the only two people in the race with an ideological core.
