Gov. Bev Perdue’s office is touting a letter (PDF) she received from the mayors of 53 North Carolina cities backing her proposal to raise the sales tax by 0.75 cents. (Press release here.)

Dome notes that the mayors “represent cities big and small, from one end of the state to another.”

And, we found, almost every one is a Democrat.

Carolina Journal‘s Don Carrington used Board of Election records to look up the party affiliations of all 53, and found two Republicans (Earl Sheppard of Pilot Mountain and David Combs of Rocky Mount) and two unaffiliateds (Jerry Combs of Morehead City and Scott Padgett of Concord).

It’s no surprise that 49 Democrat mayors would support the Democrat governor’s initiative. But moreover, what do mayors have to do with the finances or management of public schools?

And since the N.C. League of Municipalities has more than 540 member governments, then nearly 500 mayors have yet to take a public position on the tax hike.

Nothing to see here folks, move along.
