The pre-season college basketball polls are out. And they look all too familiar for the ACC: UNC-Chapel Hill #1, Dook #6, and… well, that’s it. Exactly two ranked ACC teams. To be fair, Florida State is the top among the “others receiving votes” in both polls, so it’s pretty fair to call them #26. After that… er, Miami gets a few votes in the AP Poll, placing them about #42, behind Belmont and just ahead of Harvard. There’s no love for Miami in the coach’s poll but Virginia does show up at about #42. And the other seven teams in the conference get no mention at all.

So two elite teams, one very good team and then bubbleville at best. Sort of like the ACC has been for about the last five years or so.

Bonus Observation: How many ACC teams make the NCAAs will largely be determined by what happens by the end of the year. Clemson, Virginia, Miami, Maryland etc. doing something before the conference schedule begins will go a long way to getting more ACC teams into the Big Dance.
