I have decided to start a new public education campaign for far-left extremists to teach them the basics of government and anything else they may be having problems understanding.  I’d include pictures, but I only have so much time.

Today’s lesson: The state legislature.  Click here for today’s reading.

In the budget, there is a provision that would prohibit some state agencies from exceeding federal standards on their own.

Here’s what the Sierra Club’s Molly Diggins is quoted as saying in the Wilmington Star-News:

“It’s just hard to understand why the Legislature would want to give up the state’s prerogative to make the best decisions for North Carolina,” Diggins said.

This states’ rights argument has also been echoed elsewhere.

Here’s the thing: We have something called the state legislature.  If the legislature wants to exceed federal standards, they can do so.  It isn’t a states’ right issue because North Carolina still has the right to do what it wants when it comes to exceeding federal standards.

The only question is whether unelected and unaccountable state bureaucrats should make these critical policy decisions or whether elected legislators who are accountable to the people should make these decisions.

I think most people would select the latter because of the whole “representative government thing.”

Next week’s lesson: Policy should be based on analysis, not on feelings.
