Several bills were discussed in the House Judiciary Committee today. H.B. 36, Government Contactors Must Use E-Verify, was the first brought up and the PCS requires employers in the state, and entities and their subcontractors who contract with a government agency in our state, to use the federal E-verify program to verify the work authorization of newly hired employees. The bill failed due to a tied vote of 5:5

H.B. 374, Eugenics Records/Public Records Exemption, passed with no debate.

H.B.  714, Legal Services, produced a short debate. This included a statement from the President of the N.C. Bar association who was unhappy with the bill, saying it alters the relationship between lawyer and client and also creates a conflict of interest. It passed with a vote of 7:3.

Bills 732 and 652 were not brought up before the Committee.
