Interior designers, hair braiders, auctioneers, and barbers, each must be licensed in different states. The Economist calls it Rules for Fools. Often there is a claim to protect public health, safety, and welfare. The Wall Street Journal reported that an interior designer in Florida claimed that if the legislature there deregulated her profession, “what you’re basically doing is contributing to 88,000 deaths every year.”
