In her latest column, Fannie Flono, associate editor of the Charlotte Observer, declares that “we’re throwing out many good teachers” from our public schools.

Why should we assume that any teachers who must be laid off are good at what they do?  Those who defend public schools want the public to believe that all 95,000 public school teachers qualify for sainthood/Nobel Prize/MacArthur Foundation grant, and, as such, our schools cannot afford to lose any of them.  That assumption does considerable harm to the education of our kids.
