Some know him as a Raleigh native, others know him as one of three Tar Heel U.S. presidents, but most know Andrew Johnson as the first president who faced impeachment.

The N.C. History Project, Campbell Law School, and N.C. Institute for Constitutional Law helped people learn more about the 17th president through a special forum Tuesday night in Raleigh. Two Johnson experts discussed different aspects of his career and political battles.

Paul Bergeron, professor of history emeritus at the University of Tennessee, discussed “From U.S. Senator to Impeached President: Seven Things to Know About Andrew Johnson.” In this video clip, Bergeron discusses key elements of Johnson’s political philosophy.

Attorney David O. Stewart wrote Impeached: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln’s Legacy. In this video clip, he explains how lawyers helped save Johnson from being removed from office in the midst of a political battle over the dismissal of his War secretary.
