Among the other N.C. Court of Appeals opinions released this morning:

  • A unanimous three-judge panel reversed trial-court rulings and favored a former Stoneville police chief in his legal battle against the town over wrongful discharge and retirement benefits.
  • A unanimous three-judge panel reversed a ruling from the N.C. Industrial Commission that would have forced the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources to pay property owners $220,000 in a dispute over the property’s suitability for a septic system. The appeals court ruled that the amount of damages was based on an incorrect determination of the property’s fair market value.
  • A unanimous three-judge panel reversed a trial-court ruling in a case involving unemployment benefits for a former Edgecombe County social services administrator. The appellate ruling favors the unemployed worker and the state Employment Security Commission.
  • A unanimous three-judge panel reversed a ruling from the N.C. Industrial Commission and ruled against Mission Hospital in a dispute over attorney’s fees in the case of a nurse injured on the job.
  • A unanimous three-judge panel affirmed a lower-court ruling against Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority in a case of compensation linked to the taking of riparian rights.
  • A unanimous three-judge panel affirmed a ruling from the N.C. Industrial Commission favoring East Carolina medical school in a medical negligence dispute.
