Get ready, Raleigh residents. Mayor Meeker is advocating for a hike in the property tax rate.

Mayor Charles Meeker wants Raleigh to move forward with “people-friendly” projects such as city-financed sidewalks, greenways and bike lanes despite the continuing grip of the economic downturn.

These projects, along with additional affordable housing, would cost about $50 million and require a half-cent increase in the property tax rate.

“I think getting rid of the sidewalk assessment is going to be popular,” he said Monday after a state-of-the-city address.
