The same people that wanted to bring Asheville partisan municipal elections are interested in introducing Instant Runoff Voting (IRV). To make a point, Mayor Terry Bellamy read the page or so of instructions out loud through three requests from Councilwoman Robin Cape to hush for already making her point. Exit polls indicate that two weeks after an Asheville city election, a large number of voters don’t know for whom they voted. A larger number are inclined to say that issues unrelated to the office influenced their choice of candidates. Hendersonville experimented with IRV earlier this year with differing comments about its level of complexity. Now, the system is being challenged as un-Constitutional in Minnesota.
