December 21, Asheville and Buncombe County will, following proclamations supported by the elected representatives of both jurisdictions, be participating in Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. The intent is to make sure nobody sleeps outside on the longest night of the year.

Though the oversight of Asheville’s Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness was recently absorbed into city government, this particular initiative would rely on voluntarism. The public is asked to donate time, meals, and blankets to private-sector facilities that are opening their doors that night.

As another facet of the program, city government is indirectly asking citizens to place in their windows a poster brandishing erroneous statements that have recently characterized the campaign rhetoric of Democrat candidates.
