Another man was gunned down to his death in Asheville yesterday. According to the local daily, it was the third homicide in a week, and the eighth this year. Asheville only was home to three homicides in 2005 and in 2006.

Not to worry, Asheville’s got greater problems. At city council’s last meeting, Robin Cape suggested applying a percentage of property tax increases toward a greenways fund. Cape wanted to turn active development into a resource to fund the kind of initiatives Asheville embraces for staving off climate change and keeping the mountains green. This would take care of the dilemma in which council always finds itself, looking for funding when opportunities to buy a conservation easement crop up.

Call me a dreamer, but I’m looking forward to the point at which the UDO starts addressing (after building color and setback, placement of trees, sense of community feel, LEED certification, etc.) the number of corpses that can lay in front of buildings.
