Students for a Sensible Drug Policy is a new group on the UNC-Asheville campus. The group has absolutely nothing to do with using drugs. They only want the country’s drug policy reformed. SSDP is a “national grassroots” organization. Its objective is to fight against federal policies that “harm many students.”

One important goal is to reform the policy of requiring recipients of federal scholarships to avoid getting a drug rap. Some students are busted for only possessing a gram of pot, and more than 80% of drug arrests are for possession. Students are kicked out of residence halls or expelled just because they carry drugs around. Evidently, it would never occur to most of the mules to use or sell their contraband.

Faculty sponsor Mark Gibney says U.S. drug policy is “racist.”
