Weaverville is considering merging its ABC board with that of the City of Asheville. Asheville’s ABC system is now the 11th most profitable in the state.

This was not the case a few years ago. One of the system’s best situated stores realized embarrassingly low profit margins. Unbelievable numbers of bottles were written off as breakage. Then the board was scandalized when photos were passed to city council members of a stripper at a board wild party. One board member, Debora Holmes-Young, expensed as ABC business an overnight stay at the Grove Park Inn.

Curtis Canty was appointed to oversee the board as GM, Deloitte was contracted for an audit, and CPA extraordinaire Kenneth Kaplan was appointed to fill another vacancy. To the wonderment of folks who were not quick to cry foul, council reappointed Holmes-Young and Barbara Field to the board in spite of the odd business practices conducted under their noses. Mayor Charles Worley was named chairman of the board.
