Greetings from Office Depot in north Atlanta. I spent the day in Suwanee, a vision of planning run-amok. The first sign was all the buildings that looked like they came out of the It’s a Small World ride in Disneyland.  The second sign was a drug store that was encircled in asphalt with an inner rim of pavement. One had to circle the whole store to park. They didn’t have what I needed, but there was another store across the street. Not wanting to do double-figure-eights, I left the car parked and walked on the grass, as the meandering sidewalks to nowhere were of no help. The third tell-tale sign was my destination point. It was one of many subdivisions of McMansions on crackerbox-sized lots. Developers have to make their price points in spite of planning penalties. What’s next?

Well, back home in Asheville, we’ve been hearing about other cities going bankrupt. Councilman Jan Davis and City Manager Gary Jackson just returned from a trip where they were getting information about the recent bankruptcy of Pittsburgh. It makes one wonder.

Not to fear. Asheville, like Hendersonville are tending to the greatest threat to liberties and our American way of life: Al Gore.
