A woman was apprehended for embezzling over $165,000 from the Asheville-Mountain Chapter of the Red Cross. According to the local daily, this is 9% of the chapter’s $1.25 million budget. (Don’t ask me, I only have a BS in math.)
A pending lawsuit alleges that the perp embezzled $250,056 from the Cape Fear Academy, which is seeking restitution. She has a clean criminal background, though, and was let out on $10,000 bond.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross is hoping to recover some of their losses with their bonding insurance, they hope to get more money by going after the perp’s house, and they are going to pay for postage to send a letter to all donors explaining the situation.
