Winston-Salem officials get their first look at their new $25 million downtown baseball stadium:

Council Member Wanda Merschel, the committee’s chairwoman, said in an interview that the ballpark “is reminiscent of Camden Yards,” where the Baltimore Orioles play. That park, situated in downtown Baltimore, has been praised for its classic design. Several cities have imitated its design.

Note the $25 million is less than the original $29 million the city offered up in January:

Derwick Paige, a deputy city manager, told the committee that under the new plan, the city can expect to spend less money. The plan includes the sale of Ernie Shore Field to Wake Forest University.

“All in all, it’s a much better package than you approved back in January,” Paige said. “We’re able to borrow considerably less. It costs us less to borrow the money.”

Breath a sigh of relief, W-S taxpayers.
