gMeet Davon Gaskin. Gaskin was among the 169 people arrested during the CMPD crackdown on Uptown during the July 4th fireworks event.

Gaskin told WCNC that the arrest taught him a lesson.

“I got caught up in the moment, I was heated a little because of the way the officers came up to us. We just went down there to have a good time,” Gaskin told reporter Mark Boone.

Gaskin also related that he had been arrested during the 2005 melee in Uptown after the July 4th fireworks. That “lesson” evidently did not take.

And here is where things get complicated.

There is no record of Gaskin being arrested in 2005, when he would have been 16. Let’s assume Gaskin is telling the truth, however.

Gaskin was also arrested last year Uptown during the 4th of July on four misdemeanors including assaulting a government official. With this year’s arrest, Davon Gaskin has been arrested three July 4ths in a row on essentially the same charges.

And — as ever — there is more.

Gaskin’s arrest record also shows a September 2005 arrest for disorderly conduct. A November 2005 arrest for assault and battery. A July 2006 arrest — days after the 4th — for felony cocaine possession. A May 2007 arrest on three felony counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Better still, the arrest last July 4th came with his brother Jarius Gaskin, who was charged with with carrying a concealed weapon along with assault on an officer. In June Jarius had been arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge. In September he was arrested on misdemeanors including possesion of marijuana and resisting an officer. Jarius Gaskin was also arrested in April 2007 on two charges of felony robbery with a dangerous weapon.

In April 2006 a Gaskin sister, Shaday Gaskin was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of damage to real property.

And on Wednesday night, 14-year-old Dareem Gaskin was also arrested for violating curfew.

His big brother Davon was watching him.
