Will Winston-Salem get more federal money now that Democrats are in control of Congress?

The Ferguson Group’s Leslie Mozingo hopes so, lest the city and the county take a closer look at its $120,000 contract

In an e-mail to city and county officials two weeks ago, Mozingo explained that the November elections and subsequent shift of power to the Democrats have “cleared the decks” on spending requests.

“Unless there is some unexpected revolt by rank-and-file members, this … will have significant impacts on your pending appropriations project requests. While there could be a short-term negative impact, I am confident there will be opportunities to advance your projects through the FY07 agency process and the FY08 congressional appropriations process and beyond,” she wrote….

Last year, however, the lack of results from The Ferguson Group showed that there are no guarantees when it comes to politics and money.

The Ferguson Group collected $60,000 each from the county and city but did not get net any federal money for local projects. It had been assigned to try to obtain money for such projects as the Interstate 74 extension, a public-safety command center and greenways.

Unfortunately for taxpayers, the group has nowhere to go but up.
