Greensboro’s notables present their wish list to Greensboro taxpayers.

GCS Superintendent Terry Grier:

Personally, I want to work together with the city councils in Greensboro and High Point and the county commissioners on a plan that would guarantee all (area public) high school graduates a minimum two years free at GTCC. That education would be transferable to any state university.

Coliseum director Matt Brown:

I’d like to see the community and City Council focus on the opportunity to purchase the old Canada Dry property on High Point Road. It would be an ideal location for the Convention and Visitors Bureau. It could be a catalyst to help us revive and improve the appearance of High Point Road by renovating the grand old 1930s Canada Dry building and using it as a convention center a mile from the interstate. It would create a true welcome mat for our community.

It’s going to be an 2007, considering the fact that 2006 ended in a somewhat disappointing fashion with the setbacks befalling two major downtown projects, the International Civil Rights Museum and Bellmeade Village. That’s got to frustrate Greensboro’s notables and certainly will prompt them to pursue ambitious plans like the ones mentioned above.
