I took the N&R’s Rob Daniels to task last week when he proclaimed Wake Forest champions after the Deacs’ victory over Maryland. But now the Deacs really are champions. ACC champions.

I hate to be a curmudgeon here, but all I can think about is how Wake’s historic triumph is now obscured by yet another BCS controversy. While I think Florida was the right selection to face Ohio State in the championship game, it doesn’t change the fact that the system is flawed, to say the least. As a result, Wake is consigned to a meaningless exhibition game. The Deacs don’t even have the privilege of being part of the New Year’s Day football festivities. In its infinite wisdom, the BCS has sandwiched the Orange Bowl between two days of, ugh, work.

Furthermore, no one will ever know just how good this Wake team is. A win over Louisville would certainly be impressive, but when it’s over, it’s over. There will be no Cindarella run to the championship the way college football now works. OK, such a run is improbable, but not impossible. Nothing’s impossible.
