I’m not talking about Iraq — I’m talking about Reidsville:

City officials, business owners and residents hope to strike a balance over the city’s sign ordinance and end more than a year of frustration for all concerned. The city’s Community Development office held the first of two informal public meetings earlier this month to discuss how City Council might revise the ordinance, which restricts where and how often businesses can display temporary advertising signs like those used at gas stations and by real estate companies…

The ordinance in question limits the use of temporary signs, ranging from sandwich-style clapboards, to signs staked into the ground, to small billboards pinned to poles. The ordinance has been in city code books for years but got renewed vigilance and enforcement after a citizen-led appearance task force recommended doing so last year.

But opponents are concerned the ordinance isn’t being enforced consistently, a point with which Community Development Director Michael Pearce agrees. Pearce said his office is outnumbered when it comes to trying to fight the sign-ordinance battle.

Let’s hope civil war doesn’t break out.
