In legislative races, there’s no way to avoid describing a big win for Democrats.

Dems picked up as many as five seats in the House and up to two seats in the Senate.

N.C. House Speaker Jim Black might pay for the scandals that surround him (even if his seven-vote win holds up, his colleagues could choose a new leader), but no other Democrat has lost because of Black.

Of the 170 seats in the General Assembly, Republicans took one seat from Democrats. Rep. Jean Preston took a Senate seat from a Democratic appointee in a highly competitive district.

In statewide judicial races, the end of partisan campaigns means good news for Democrats. Of the six contested elections, Democrats won at least four. If Linda Stephens pulls ahead of Donna Stroud, Dems will go five for six. (And they didn’t fight Republican Mark Martin in the sixth race.)

More punditry will surely follow.
