Karen Palasek’s Faculty Affiliate Program (FAP) hosted 18 guests Wednesday night in Raleigh for a speech by Dr. Bruce Yandle, professor of economics emeritus and interim dean of the College of Business and Behavioral Science at Clemson University. In remarks titled “Bootleggers, Baptists, and Regulatory U-Turns,” Dr. Yandle discussed how industries sometimes support regulation of their product to reduce or eliminate competition from those who can’t meet the standard, and how policy debates sometimes make strange bedfellows as in the case of Baptists who opposed prohibition but, in doing so, ended up unwittingly aligned with gangsters who provided booze. The mission of the FAP is to develop a network of classical liberal scholars from across North Carolina’s universities and colleges, and build on interest and research within the classical liberal tradition.
