While I was pleasantly surprised to see that the N&R didn’t endorse every bond proposal, I’ll admit I was surprised that the paper’s editorial board left the Greensboro Historical Museum to fend for itself:

Greensboro’s view of its past has grown stale and confined, prompting a push to modernize and enlarge the historical museum. The goal is worthy, but supporters haven’t offered a convincing case to back up a $5.3 million bond proposal.

Lee Williams, a member of the museum’s board of trustees, told the City Council back in the summer it had recently been designated as an affiliated site of the Smithsonian Institution, which would help draw better exhibits.

Ironically, it’s Smithsonian affiliation that is holding up completion of the International Civil Rights Museum, for which the N&R wholeheartedly endorses bond money.

So an established museum, however humble, is less worthy of public support than a fledgling museum with a less-than-stellar record of meeting its goals. Ideally, the N&R editorial board would support neither bond. But since they’re picking and choosing…..
