Here’s an interesting political battle down in Randolph County:

A candidate for District Court judge has made accusations of prejudice and sexual discrimination by the Randolph County Republican Party chair.

Kristian Allen, one of two Republican candidates for the 19-B District Court judicial seat, leveled the allegations at GOP Chair Alan Pugh in a press conference Thursday.

Allen claims that Pugh is using his power as party chair to back her opponent, incumbent Scott Etheridge, who also happens to be Pugh’s former law partner.

Both Allen and Etheridge are Republicans, but Pugh doesn’t like the company Allen has been keeping:

Pugh said there is a deeper concern in Allen’s campaign. He alleged that “it is well known” that, although she is a Republican, Allen was recruited by Democrats to run against Etheridge.

“Mrs. Allen’s campaign is the sole creation of roughly 12 criminal defense lawyers, mostly Democrats, who think that Judge Etheridge is too tough on their clients and too vocal about his religious beliefs,” he said.

Pugh makes the point that I made earlier in the week: that candidates running for political office should always show their political stripes:

“One of my roles is to preserve the integrity of the two-party system so that voters are not confused.”

Oh yeah, the sexual discrimination. That’s easy: Allen’s a woman and Etheridge is a man.
