According to yesterday’s Durham Herald-Sun, that’s the allegation from Orange County resident Mark Gill, who along with his neighbors, is fighting an annexation attempt by Carrboro officials. Usually, when North Carolina residents fight against annexation, they want no part of ANY effort to be swallowed up by a city or town. But, in Orange County, this dust-up has a new twist. Gill and his neighbors are countering that they want to be part of Chapel Hill instead of Carrboro. Their fight includes an e-mail campaign to members of the General Assembly. It’s about time legislators come to the reasonable conclusion that citizens deserve a say in their future. Our own Michael Lowrey has written several good stories about annexation and this one gives a good description of how easy it is for local governments to do it, a law Lowrey describes as “among the most liberal in the nation.”
