Harvard President Lawrence Summers is under attack for not making enough job offers to women. Note the phrasing. It isn’t for not hiring enough women. It’s for not making enough offers to women. I think there is a reason for that.

We have a bit of a clue as to why he might not have been hit for the hiring numbers. “Out of a total of 32 offers last year, just four were made to women, and of the 22 candidates who accepted, only one was a woman.”

When Harvard did offer jobs to women last year, three-quarters of the women did not accept. Hard to blame Summers for that.

One wonders how many qualified women were in the original applicant pool. Conveniently, that is not mentioned.
