For more evidence that this Orange County California program is about bringing home schoolers under the wing of the state’s education establishment, just check out this quote from the Community Home Education Program web site.

“Each family at CHEP is assigned to a caring, credentialed teacher who will help you select curriculum and set academic goals, as well as help you gauge your child’s progress. The CHEP teacher’s role is to facilitate, support, and encourage. This teamwork has been the key to our program’s success.”

In the state of California and throughout the country there are many hundreds of voluntary, non-state supported, home school support groups. In states like California and North Carolina, where home schooling is common and widespread, these groups are very accessible and effective at providing all of the services described above. The only reason why California or any state would need to get involved in “helping” home schoolers “choose curriculum,” “set goals,” or “gauge [a] child’s progress” is if their purpose is to control the home schooling process.

Karen is correct. Home schoolers are already exercising educational freedom and school choice. Any attempt to entice them back into the government school system, either with charter schools or programs like the one in California should be opposed by all those who value real freedom of choice in education.
